Diving in Sudan
Sanganeb Atoll, a near-perfect ring reef with a British-built lighthouse at its center, is a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the most photographed reef structures in the Red Sea.
The Umbria, an Italian cargo steamer scuttled in 1940 with its WWII munitions cargo still visible, lies close to shore and is considered one of the best wreck dives in the Red Sea.
Sha’ab Rumi hosts the remains of Cousteau’s Conshelf II habitat and is known for resident hammerhead and grey reef shark encounters along its walls.

Country
Sudan sits on the western shore of the Red Sea, between Egypt and Eritrea. Its capital is Khartoum, at the confluence of the Blue and White Nile, but the diving is done far to the east, out of the port city of Port Sudan. The national currency is the Sudanese pound.
Sudanese waters were surveyed by Jacques Cousteau in the 1950s and 60s, and the Red Sea coast here has stayed markedly less developed and less dived than Egypt’s to the north, which is exactly the draw for liveaboard divers looking for pristine reefs and big pelagic encounters away from crowds.
