Wellenreng is a traditional 25-metre wooden Phinisi sailing yacht (6 metres wide) built in the renowned boatbuilding village of Tanah Beru on South Sulawesi's coast, using a durable ironwood hull and full teakwood interior. Construction started in August 2008 and took three years; the boat made her maiden voyage to Flores in 2011. Her name comes from La Galigo, the South Sulawesi creation epic of the Bugis people, where Wellenreng was the vessel built by the hero Sarawigadeng to sail to China and bring home his bride. Today the yacht runs small-group, fully-crewed private liveaboard expeditions around Indonesia, taking a maximum of six guests (up to nine with children) across just three cabins - a master cabin with a king bed plus two cabins with queen beds, each cabin also fitted with an extra single bed, air conditioning, an en-suite hot-water bathroom, a safe and bathrobes - looked after by a crew of nine including a dedicated cruise director. She is fully rigged for diving with nitrox included, 3-4 dives a day (including night dives), a 7-metre twin-engine dinghy with individual seats and tank holders, and freshwater rinse tanks and a hot-water shower on the dive deck; snorkellers and non-divers are equally welcome. Between dives, guests can relax on a shaded panoramic observation deck with beanbags, a sundeck with loungers, an indoor salon, or a small library, and explore lagoons and mangroves by kayak or paddleboard. An Indonesian-European fusion menu is served al fresco by the onboard chef, alongside a curated wine, beer and espresso selection. Wellenreng's itineraries cover Komodo National Park, Raja Ampat, the Banda Sea, Sulawesi (including Lembeh and the Togian Islands), Halmahera, the Forgotten Islands and Triton Bay, reaching remote reefs and hidden lagoons that day boats can't access.
